Random collected rants from my journey to live and work in Australia. Big whoop, wanna fight about it?

Boat Party

Yesterday was australia day so everyone was flying aussie flags from their cars and wearing green and gold like proper patriots. My flatmates and their friends took me on a party cruise on the harbour to celebrate. It's kinda like those party busses we have back in christchurch except there's three levels (each with different music), two bars, and your on frickin' Sydney harbour with the opera house and bridge and that.

We took the ferry from Manly to Circular Quay and walked to where we were embarking at the steps of the opera house. After a sobering wait of about half an hour, we boarded and got under way. The top level was the place to be for the first couple of hours, enjoying the sun and the funk/soul music. Their friends are cool. Most of them were chicks, some aussies, some UKians and some Irish. They snuck flasks of booze on board which was a good idea in hindsight, as the beers were ~$9 a pop. The boat went around the harbour, up to Taronga Zoo then back under the bridge. We had a good time, drinking, dancing, then around nine o'clock we muscled our way upstairs for a good view of the fireworks. They were a bit late in starting but they were incredible. Not as huge as the new years' ones, but they had lots of green and gold explosions mixed in there.

An hour or so later they turned the lights on on the dance floor cos we were back at the opera house where we left from. Me and Amanda managed to lose track of everyone, but we had intended to go home after anyway because she had to work the next day and I have to fly to Melbourne for BDO.

I don't have a camera but I'm sure pictures of the day/night will be forthcoming.

I'm really glad I only got slightly sunburnt. Sunburn sucks, especially when I have to spend the whole day outside at BDO tomorrow.

Geez $9 a beer sounds super shocking to me at the moment. For that price around here you can buy the pub.
